Similar as the gut, the oral cavity harbors a unique microbiota having a key role in our immune defense. 

An intact oral microbiota harbors various species of beneficial bacteria crowding out pathogens with some species can even produce specific molecules inhibiting pathogens.


Oral Microbiota Imbalance Weakens the Immune Defense

Streptococcus salivarius is a naturally occurring human commensal bacterial species of the oral microbiota, that is established from around two days after birth at sites including the pharynx, tongue, and buccal membranes.

The human oral microbiota is made up of more than 700 different species of microorganisms (including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa). This is one of the most diverse human microbiota, second only to the intestinal microbiota.

However, the composition of the microbiota varies with age and our lifestyle impacts the composition. E.g., high intake of sugars reducing the pH or antibiotics use can reduce the protective bacteria leading to an imbalance called dysbiosis allowing pathogens to settle down and invade the respiratory tract.

Streptococci – Friends and Foes

Streptococci are a common family of bacteria widely known as pathogens. However, similar as known for the gut microbiota, there are “good” and “bad” species belonging to this family. 

Streptococcus salivarius is a naturally occurring human commensal bacterial species, that is established from around two days after birth at sites including the pharynx, tongue, and buccal membranes. The Streptococcus salivarius species is capable of producing antibacterial molecules, such as, for example, salivaricins or "natural antibiotics". Those ones act against invading pathogens that try to infect the host.


What is Bactoblis®

Bactoblis® contains a unique strain of Streptococcus salivarius. The strain was discovered when researchers investigated the oral microbiota of hundreds of children. The Bactoblis® strain was then isolated from a child with exceptional respiratory health and it happened to be the twelfth child on the list – hence K12.

This Bactoblis® K12 strain is a major natural producer of bacteriocins or "natural antibiotics" with a with a broad spectrum of action against microorganisms that counteracts the invasion of respiratory microorganisms. Altogether, the Bactoblis-K12 strain can be considered a key member of the protective microbiota in the respiratory tract.

But only 2% of the general population harbors commensal K12 like S. salivarius strains.
